World's Largest Cryogenic Plant Upgrades Control System with InduSoft

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY is presently the world’s largest and most powerful accelerator used for fundamental subatomic research. Hundreds of physicists use RHIC to study what the universe may have looked like in the first moments after its creation. RHIC drives two intersecting beams of gold ions head-on in a subatomic collision. The ion beams are directed by 1800 magnets spaced around a huge loop, and beneath silvery insulation layers, super-cold gaseous helium bathes each magnet. This keeps them cold enough for the magnet’s superconducting wire to work properly. RHIC operates at 4.5 degrees above absolute zero on the Kelvin temperature scale. The helium gas used to chill them requires its own separate refrigeration unit—the world’s largest cryogenic facility.

"More Bang for the Buck"

McGoff-Bethune, Inc. chose InduSoft HMI software for a new series of extrusion control systems because it enabled the company to build powerful, inexpensive operator stations which can be integrated across a plant-wide network. The new extrusion control systems are sold primarily to the plastics industry for retrofits or upgrades on existing equipment. A typical application involves production of plastic sheets, bottles, Styrofoam, tableware or containers.

Metron, Inc.

Metron helps customers in the worldwide semiconductor industry to improve wafer yields, lower operating costs, and improve process efficiency. Ensuring that none of the highly reactive gases used in semiconductor manufacture escapes into the environment is crucial to successful manufacturing. Metron flow abatement tools treat gas effluent from semiconductor fabrication. The Metron Marathon series is an advanced point-of-use integrated thermal/wet treatment system that provides a controlled gas conditioning environment for semiconductor process chemistries. The Marathon series performs controlled decomposition/ oxidation treatment of flammable, pyrophoric, corrosive, and particulate generating process recipes.

City of Rock Hill

Like many other municipalities, the city of Rock Hill, South Carolina faced the technical problems with the controls in their water and waste water treatment facilities.  The old DCS system that was installed had become costly to maintain and then the Y2K dilemma forced a change in approach. Rather than stick with main-line turnkey automation suppliers, Rock Hill embarked on an multi-year program to move to open, PC based systems, expand functionality, lower operating costs and improve operation. They started this program at the city’s waste water treatment plant.

Advanced Vacuum Technology

The highest quality band saws, hack saws, reciprocating blade saws and hole saws all use bimetallic blades.  In order to produce these blades, the blade maker has to start by welding a continuous ribbon of M2 or M42 tool steel onto flexible backing material.  Welding is done by directing a high velocity stream of electrons at the two pieces of metal in a vacuum chamber while the two strips are brought together in one continuous operation.

IMPACT

The Council of OBOUR City, Located in the East Cairo, invited Tender offers for the building of a Modern monitoring and control system for the area's water treatment, supply, and distribution. Organizations bidding on the offer faced several complicating factors while developing a solution. OBOUR's water is distributed to homes and businesses across a relatively large 350-square kilometer area. In addition, the system employs a large number of pumping stations. IMPACT won the contract and has successfully implemented a first-stage, whose main components are the PC-based a supervisory control system and data acquisition to the Boosting station.

MPI, Inc.

Lost wax investment casting has been used for millennia to produce intricate metal objects that can not be created any other way. While this process has always made it possible for anything that can be modeled in wax to be precisely transmuted into metal, today’s sophisticated technology has moved beyond traditional uses such as fine jewelry and sculpture into the manufacture of specialized industrial parts.
