The REN21 global status report on clean energy lists some interesting findings on the global renewable energy market. You can read the key findings report here. Among the information included in report are some interesting statistics on the market for renewable energy, including:
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21)
The report notes that the convention in Paris of this year included 147 countries who proposed scaling up renewable energy solutions, as well as 167 that stressed energy efficiency in their proposals. This commitment to mitigating climate change to under 2 degrees Celsius is expected to result in an increase in global use of renewable energy, particularly in the power sector.
The increasing renewable power capacity
2015 saw 147 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power capacity added, the largest annual increase recorded. Renewable heat capacity increased by around 38 gigawatts-thermal (GWth), and total biofuels production also rose.
Jobs in renewable energy
It is estimated that the renewable energy sector increased to over 8 million jobs in 2015, with large-scale hydropower adding over 1 million additional jobs. This represents plenty of opportunity for systems integrators, engineers, and application designers, particularly in energy metering. The leading job markets in renewable energy are China, Brazil, USA, and India.
Included in the report are trends for key renewable energy sectors such as biomass, geothermal, hydropower, ocean energy, solar, and wind. All industries show an increase in development, but most face either economic or policy challenges.
